Welcome to my FIFA 19 Marseille Career Mode series! In this series, I’ll be documenting my progress through the 2018/19 season as I attempt to do better than Rudi Garcia.

I play FIFA 19 on World Class difficulty using default sliders and with matches set to 6-minute halves. I also like as much realism as possible, so I’ve disabled transfers at the start of the first season – meaning I have to use the same players that the club started the season with.

Another thing I like to do in FIFA is something I call the ‘facist challenge’, which sounds like a despicable combination of fascism and racism. It actually just means I hate FIFA’s generic player faces. So over the course of the series I will aim to sell any players with generic faces and replace them with players with real faces.

Right then, let’s get straight into this FIFA 19 Marseille career, shall we?

August 2018

Toulouse (Ligue 1)

We start the season with a home game against Toulouse at the Velodrome. New signing Kevin Strootman starts in midfield, while Florian Thauvin and Dimitri Payet will look to make the difference in attack.

Florian Thauvin does prove to be the difference in this one by grabbing both goals in a 2-0 win, one in each half. The first is a well taken strike from close range, while the second is an overhead kick that takes two deflections on its way in.

A solid win to start the season gives us a bit of a head start before the rest of Ligue 1 commence their seasons over the next few days.

Nimes (Ligue 1)

Next up, it’s a visit to Nimes, who are one of the newly promoted teams. Kevin Strootman drops to the bench after a fairly anonymous debut, which means Luis Gustavo moves into midfield. Gregory Sertic takes his place in central defence.

We get off to a bad start as Sada Thioub fires Nimes into an early lead. Thankfully, Lucas Ocampos equalises shortly afterwards and goals from Thauvin, Payet, and Kostas Mitroglou give us a 4-1 lead at the break. Mitroglou and Ocampos add further goals in the second half to seal a 6-1 thrashing.

With six points, we are joint top with Lyon and Rennes who are the only other sides with a 100% record.

Rennes (Ligue 1)

Back home again in Ligue 1, this time to take on Rennes. We start with the same XI as last time, hoping for an equally strong performance.

Dimitri Payet gives us the lead with a coolly taken strike midway through the first half. After the break, Florian Thauvin continues his fine form with his 4th goal in three games. It ends 2-0, another solid victory and a clean sheet.

Rennes’ defeat means only Lyon and ourselves still hold a 100% record after three games.

So that brings an end to August 2018. Three straight wins in Ligue 1 is a fantastic start, and we’ll see if we can maintain that form in September, when our Europa League campaign begins.
